hmm.. a general wood axe would have to have a good edge, be decently balanced to begin with simply to make the job of cutting wood easier.

It's not designed to be as fast as an axe that is going to be used in combat. It is designed to take out large chunks of a tree, will likely be weighted more heavily to the end so you swing it back, get a decent speed up as you come back against the tree. likely also to have the sharp edge of the blade at a different angle. That doesn't mean specifically that a wood axe wouldn't be able to be used as a weapon..... but it wouldn't have the same stats in the same places as an axe designed for battle.

I'm not saying it should.. a battleaxe would do more damage.

A single bladed axe made as a weapon would probably be slightly faster and lighter than a wood axe. The blade would be place optimally for that purpose.
Similarly there is the difference between a dagger and a throwing knife. You could try and throw a dagger, but it wouldn't be as easy to do it.

nods, but the more effective as a throwing knife, the less efective as a dagger, and vica versa, is a good general rule to use

Yes. Avoiding the unrealistic situation where a character is in a kitchen and cannot find a weapon to defend themselves when surrounded by pots, pans, kitchen knives and meat cleavers.... while also making sure that there is a difference between a tool (impromptu weapon) and a weapon.
Something else that gets me thinking is the concept in live roleplay at least that if you have no skill in a particular weapon then you cannot use it. It seems unrealistic because for me, irl, if i were being attacked I'd grab whatever came to hand and use it. I might not be a pro, but unless it's complex (like a gun) or physically hard to use (like a bow) then I would be able to do it.
